Are there mail order services for prescriptions?

Pharmacy Benefit Managers (or PBMs) such as Express Scripts are mail order services for prescription drugs.

PBMs are usually third-party administrators, but can also be part of an integrated health care system, such as Kaiser or the VA. PBMs primarily handle the following items:

• Processing and paying prescription drug claims
• Developing and maintaining the drug formulary
• Contracting with pharmacies
• Negotiating discounts and rebates with drug manufacturers
