How to Find a Primary Care Physician

The Find A Provider tool on each insurance carrier's website is a good place to see a comprehensive list of in-network doctors that can be designated as a Primary Care Physician (PCP) for HMO and POS plans.

  1. Visit the carrier's website and navigate to their Find A Provider (also commonly called Find A Doctor) tool. There is usually a link to this tool right on the carrier's main page of their website.
  2. Fill in the necessary information: typically this includes the plan network, zip code, and the radius around the zip code the results should include.
  3. Get a comprehensive list of doctors who participate in that network.
  4. The list can be narrowed down by specialty (General Practitioner, Pediatrician, etc.) and whether or not they're accepting new patients.

These steps can also be used to locate the Provider ID for most carriers.

Each individual on the policy, including children, can have a unique PCP. They will each get a member ID card with the name of their PCP printed on it.
