What is an SIC code?

The Standard Industrial Code (SIC) is a 4-digit number that identifies a US business by the type of business activities they conduct. Since each SIC broadly describes a class of business activity, business do not receive a unique SIC. For example, software development companies might be classified with an SIC code of 7371.

To determine the most appropriate SIC for a company, use this US Dept of Labor tool.
