State Disability Insurance Taxes

Some states also have a mandatory State Disability Insurance (SDI) tax. Employees and employers pay the tax, but employers may choose to cover the employees' contribution amounts.

  • SDI Rates tend to be fixed (e.g., they do not change) and the same for all employers in the state.
  • SDI taxes also have wage bases, which vary from state to state.
    • Most are based on annual wages, but Hawai'i has a weekly wage base
    • New York is unique in that employees are taxed to a maximum of $ 0 .60 per week.
