Goals for Performance Management

Set a goal for yourself:

  1. After logging in to your Zenefits account, click on the Performance Management app.
  2. Select Goals from the navigation bar at the top of the page.
  3. Click Create Goal to get started.

Once you create your goal, you’ll be able to update any progress on the Goals overview page.

Set a goal for someone else in the company (limited by the scope of your permissions):

  1. After logging in to your Zenefits account, click on the Performance Management app.
  2. Select Goals from the navigation bar at the top of the page.
  3. Click Create Goal to get started.
  4. Fill out the name, description (optional), start and due date fields.
  5. Ensure the Type is Individual.
  6. You can then assign the goal to someone, based on the scope of your permissions.
Once you complete the goal, you and the individual can track its process on the Goals overview page.

If you have the permissions to edit a goal, you can do so by clicking on the stacked dots next to the goal name. From there, you can click Update to change the description, name, and start/end date.

If you don't see the option to edit the goal, then you may not have the appropriate level of permission (for example, an individual team member may not edit a company level goal).

You've done it! To mark a goal as completed, click on the gray Update Progress bar. Once you click on Close Goal, then it'll be moved to your Closed Goals section.

The completion of the goal doesn't depend on the end date. Instead, think of the end date as a target for completing the goal.

There are three methods that you can use to measure the progress of your goals by setting a target:
  • Percentage (%)
  • Volume (Numeric)
  • Dollars ($)
You'll be able to choose the measurement that most aligns with your objective when you first create your goal.
There are two statuses for goals: On Track and Off Track. All goals will be set to On Track by default.

To update the status of a goal:
  1. After logging into your Zenefits account, click on the Performance Management app.
  2. Click on Goals and locate the goal you'd like to update.
  3. Clicking on the Update Progress bar will give you the option to update the status of the goal, or mark it as complete.
Who can update the status of a goal:
Anyone who has edit access to the goal. If you don't see the option to Update Progress, you do not have the correct permissions.

All levels of workers can create goals for themselves. If you don't have any direct reports, you’ll see personal, team, department, and company goals.

Managers can create and assign individual goals to their direct reports, and they can view and edit goals that their direct reports have created. They can also create team goals that their direct reports can follow.

When completing a review, you'll see the goals for the reviewee  in the collapsible right hand side panel.

goals in reviews

If the reviewee hasn't created any goals, you'll see [Name] doesn't have any goals in the side panel.

You'll have the option to toggle between Ongoing Goals and Closed Goals in the drop down.

If your company doesn't use goals, or you don't wish to reference goals in the review, you can hide the panel at any time by clicking Hide.

If you don't have permission to access the reviewee's goals, then you will not see the side panel at all.

Company administrators can create company, department, and team goals to promote transparency and direction to all workers.

  1. After logging in to your Zenefits account, click on the Performance Management app.
  2. Select the Goals tab.
  3. Click Create Goal to get started.
  4. As an example, to make it a Company Goal, select Company from the drop down menu next to Participants.

After completing all fields, goals will be available to all applicable individuals.

Company Goals: can be created/edited by full company or HR admins and can be viewed be everyone.

Department Goals: can be created by full company or HR admins. HR admins with access to all departments can create goals for any department, while HR admins with specific department access can only create goals for departments they have permissions for. Department goals can only be viewed by members of that department.

Team Goals: can only be created by managers, and can only be viewed by individuals of that team.

Personal Goals: Managers, HR admins, and Full Company Admins can create, edit, and assign goals to individuals. They will also be able to view all personal goals of their direct reports. An individual can also create and edit personal goals, and can edit personal goals created by their manager.
