FAQs About Using and Managing HRAs for Employees

Your HRA is preloaded with the full amount at the beginning of each plan year. If you enroll mid-year as a new hire, you'll still receive the full amount for use on the start date of your plan. You can't use your HRA funds (either with your Zenefits Card, or by submitting claims) until after the start date.

Any amount you don't spend during the year goes back to your employer, and doesn't roll over to the next year. However, you can still submit claims for any eligible expenses from the previous year for another 90 days after the year ends.

Note: Zenefits is not accepting new HRA clients.

You can use your Zenefits Card to pay with HRA funds for Eligible Expenses such as copays, deductibles, prescription drugs, and some over-the-counter health care items. You can also submit claims for reimbursement if you have to pay out of pocket for any of these expenses.

As an employee, you cannot cancel your HRA during the plan year without a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). If you would like to cancel the HRA due to a QLE, then you may contact Support. If you'd like to stop participating in your company's HRAplan, just choose not to re-enroll during the company's HRA Open Enrollment period.

Nope! You don't have to meet a deductible to spend HRA funds, and you don't have to pay them back. The full amount is available for use on the first day of your plan.

Once your employment ends, you will no longer be able to use your Zenefits card to spend HRA funds. However, you have 90 days from your last day of employment to submit claims for expenses that occurred during your employment period.

Make sure to include all required documentation in your claim.

  • To submit a manual claim for HRA, complete this HRA Claims Form and send it to claims@zenefits.com.

  • After this 90 day period ends, you will lose access to any remaining funds.

As an employee, you can enroll in your company's HRA plan:

  • Within 30 days after being hired.
  • During the employer's annual HRA Open Enrollment period.

If you miss the 30-day window after getting hired, you'll have to wait until your company's HRA Open Enrollment period to enroll.

Some employers may choose auto-HRA enrollment. If your employer has chosen this, you'll be enrolled in the HRA if you have enrolled in the selected HRA compatible plan.

Note: Zenefits is not accepting new HRA clients.
